Hi everyone, it is September and we are closer than ever to my favorite season- Fall. With cooler temperatures and the residual warm earth, it is not uncommon for us to experience fog in the mornings. I love to sit on the porch in the morning with my coffee, study the fog and its interplay with the landscape.
When my brother-Mike Tyler was alive, he showed his work at Celia Strain’s “Leslie’ Gallery, I would often visit with Celia. We would talk about Mike’s work and the art scene in general during the early 2000s’ in Galveston. One time as we talked she remarked about how Mike’s interpretation of the atmospheric effects on the Galveston landscape was one of the best that she had seen. At the time we were admiring one of his paintings of a fog shrouded Strand. My friend Madeleine bought that painting. (As a side note that painting was nearly destroyed during hurricane Ike. Luckily we were able to retrieve it from her yard shortly after the water receded, in time to salvage it. We were also able to save one of her Kelver’s paintings from her yard). ….but I digress
I have painted several works lately that feature fog.The two that I have included in this blog appeal to me for different reasons. The top attached painting–the interpretation of a photograph by Donna Sollenberger drew me into the scene by the fog muting the sun and accentuating the reflections on the water. Everything was made soft by the atmosphere except the docked sail boat in the foreground. The story or the main theme in my mind is the fog and how it affected the harbor-scape.
The second painting: Time Traveler’s story is totally different. I used the the fog to reveal an allusion 0f the future. The story is about the Elissa with the future lurking in the fog. When I took the reference photo several years ago, I was struck by the Time Traveler theme. I should devote one entire blog to the Time Traveler….maybe next month.
In the meantime, I will be the featured artist at G Lee Gallery, 2217 Strand in Galveston for the month of October. Although ArtWalk is a bit different, it still thrives. Stop by the Gallery. The Show will open on October 10th. Hope that you can drop by or at least view it virtually. If you have any questions, you can contact me a 409-771-8371 or tylerstudio1201@gmail.com
take care and hope to see you soon
