Every year dear season rolls around making all of these precious creatures at risk. I am always conflicted about deer season. We feed them all year and cheer them on as they grow and prosper. We love to see them as a part of our environment. But then, this behavior on our part encourages and forces us to cull the herd. If deer had to rely on the natural food supply, there would many of them and they would not be as healthy. The herd and their health would be cyclical and dependent on the weather. And we know how unreliable the weather is these days.
If you talk to a hunter, they will argue that they are making sure that deer don’t go extinct. I on the other hand am a hypocrite–I enjoy eating deer meat as long as I don’t have to watch the carnage. I give fleeting consideration to becoming a vegetarian…
