My featured painting for this month evokes serenity to me. The moon is up and the sky is clearing after a storm. I painted this about 6 weeks ago. Let me tell you a little bit about this painting. I have a friend and patron, Jill Seale. She sent me several photographs of her family’s ranch up here in Leon County . The above painting is an interpretation of one of those photographs. The final painting is changed from the image of the original photograph. I edited the information to express my sense of the scene. The fact remains that the inspiration for this painting came from a photograph that someone else composed and created. As you notice I have indeed given Jill credit for her part in the creation of this painting. I don’t use other people’s work as a reference for my work very often. I just couldn’t help myself. When I saw Jill’s photograph of this scene, I found it iconic for Leon County.
It is important to give credit where credit is due. If you create a work of art, be it a painting, photograph or other medium, as an interpretation you should and must give credit to the original artist. There is absolutely nothing wrong with complimenting the original artist by either copying or interpreting their work. I did not copy Jill’s photograph, I interpreted the information in it. I edited it, if you will. There was another tree, a fence, more weeds, the receding clouds, the sky, the tree itself is changed. But the general overall emotion and inspiration of the painting is from my friends photograph.
On another note, a very successful Art in the Park is behind us. The Centerville Arts Commission (CAC) is now busy working on the Christmas Market on the Square on December 14th. Mark you calendars. The CAC and Master Gardeners are also proud to have Carl Puett’s deer placed in the Rose Garden just off the square. Centerville now has a heard of beautiful deer: Two on the Square, one in the pocket park across from the square, one at Citizen’s Bank, one at Community Bank, one at the elementary school, and now one in the rose garden. The CAC has been able to start this wonderful community art project with seed money from the Centerville Economic Development Commission. We look forward to finding locations in Centerville for 5 more deer.
I am wishing all of you a Happy Thanksgiving, enjoy your families and friends. Til next time, Susan
