I titled this painting “Unfinished”. The beautiful young model for this painting got busy and couldn’t sit anymore for me. I think that it would have taken 2-3 more sittings to finish this, but alas it would not be. So the obvious–the painting is unfinished, but the other reason being is that this beautiful young woman is also unfinished. She has so much to live for. So much potential.
My focus has never been to be a portrait artist, like the fine work of Eddie Filer comes to mind. He has an exquisite talent that captures the particular face and the very specific personality of the person in front of him. I am sure all of you are familiar with his work, if not be sure to look him up. He has a page on Facebook.
I love to paint the human form, but I am not so much interested in getting an exact replica of the model’s face. I am more interested in an expression of a mood, a moment in time and space. I was first drawn to this artistic construct when I saw Degas’ masterpieces of the ballerinas. The mood that he created is instantly apparent with the dancers in their various positions of repose and dance expressions. There is something so magical about gazing on their grace as he captured the moment of their emotion and movement.
The mood that I had in mind for this model: to express the very rich and powerful future she has, her magnificent dreams, while feeling the pull and work of seeing past her current “now.”
I hope that you enjoy Unfinished. Let me know what you think of her. Susan
